Pastoral Ministry with Deaf Catholics

Masses are celebrated in Sign Language on the first Sunday of each month at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hicksville at 2 P.M. and at 3 P.M. on the third Sunday of the month at St. Frances de Chantal Church in Wantagh.

St. John the Evangelist Parish hosts two Sign Language Masses during the year.  This year, they occur on the fourth Sundays of November and March at 3 P.M.   Palm Sunday is celebrated every year at St. Ignatius Loyola Church.  In addition, Interpreted Masses occur in several parishes throughout the diocese on a regular basis.

Rev. Msgr. Thomas C. Costa, Pastor of  Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Hicksville,  (516-931-4351) is the Diocesan Chaplain for the Deaf.   Sister Joan Mary Finn OP, Pastoral Worker, offers interpreting services and ASL classes on an as needed basis. She can be reached at 718-746-8759.

Please visit the Deaf Catholic Community on Facebook  for information about upcoming events.

Materials for sacramental preparation are available from the Office.  Sacramental preparation for deaf children takes place  in parishes throughout the diocese as the need arises.

Remember to advocate for an Assistive Listening Device for the hearing impaired if you parish does not have one!
