ECCLESIOLOGY
(Advanced Course)

Six sessions: Wednesdays, from Sept. 19 to Oct. 24, 2007.
7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the John Paul II room.

This course will provide some answers to the profound question, “How did Christianity go from
a religion of about twenty disciples of Jesus cowering in an upper room in Jerusalem after Jesus’ death
to the dominant and official religion of the Roman Empire by AD380?” Along the way, we will skip along mountaintops and examine the Acts of the Apostles and Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. We will ride the
waves of martyrdom that assault the Church from Nero to Diocletian. We will explore the heresies that
threatened the Church’s survival, like Marcionism, Gnosticism, and Arianism, and the fathers of the Church
who battled these heresies, such as Justin Martyr, Athanasius, Ambrose, and Augustine. We will trace the development of the canon of the New Testament and the origins of Christian art, beginning in the catacombs.
We will close with an account of the conquest of Constantine, of Christian growth in the new era, and we will examine the great masterpiece, The Confessions of St. Augustine. Come along for the ride. Instructor: Dr. Alexander Burke.
